I’m wrapping up the Introduction from my book “You Can Do the Impossible, Too!” in today’s #TouretteTalk. Just sharing these blog articles over the last few weeks has helped me gain a new perspective on living with Tourette Syndrome and any other “impossible challenge” that you and I may be dealing with.

As you read the book excerpt below, please keep in mind the simple idea of “missing the forest because of the trees.” It’s very easy to get caught up in the things that are right in front of you, including the immense difficulties that you may be dealing with. When someone makes fun of you and hurts your feelings, I want you to remember that this too shall pass.

I know how difficult it can be to live with uncontrollable tics. I know how easy it is to get lost in self-defeating inner-talk. I know how depressing it can be to not see any end in sight to your pain and frustration.

I honestly don’t have an answer that will magically cure you. What I can offer you is this…I type these words today thinking of you. I am standing firmly in your corner cheering loudly as you live the adventure of life.

I may not know you personally, but I know your pain. You may only know me through these words that I type, but I care deeply about you. And when the world looks hopeless and bleak, I want to offer you hope, love, and inspiration.

So, just remember this - I love you. I really do. I’m not trying to be cheesy or flippant. I love everything that makes you YOU. Even though we may not know each other, as you read these words I send you love, peace, and caring.

There is a plan for all of us, trust me. You may not be able to see it, but it is not to harm you. It is to raise you high and to prosper you. Even when you can’t see that plan directly in action, that doesn’t mean that it’s not there. You can trust me when I tell you that time and perspective help that plan come into focus.

So, enjoy today’s book excerpt. And let me know if these articles are valuable to you. You can simply make a comment in the comment box below. I really do read the comments. Those comments help me know that my time is well spent writing these articles. Best wishes!

(From pages 6-9 of “You Can Do the Impossible, Too!”)

It may be almost impossible for you to see right now, but you have and will continue to develop an incredible perspective on the world because of your T.S. Some of the gifts that I have developed are empathy, drive, appreciating life in the moment, standing up against bullies, and an iron will to succeed.

As a teenager with this disorder, I certainly didn’t understand that I would grow up to live the life of my dreams and have some incredible adventures. I sincerely hope that you and I meet one day in the future and you will tell me about some of your own adventures.

If you have a family member or friend with Tourette’s Syndrome and you decided to read this book in the hope that you would gain some insight into how to treat your loved one, how to care for your loved one, or how to understand what your loved one is going through, I have some advice. These are the qualities that will serve you well – patience, love, and understanding (as best you can).

As a young person with Tourette’s Syndrome, I often wondered why I had it. It didn’t seem fair that I had it. No one else I knew had T.S. Was I cursed? Had I done something wrong and this was my punishment? Why did I have to go through all the frustration and difficulty with the tics and no one else did?

Even when I was officially diagnosed with Tourette’s and could put a name to the weird movements and vocalizations, it still didn’t seem fair. And you know what? It wasn’t fair, but it was life. As we all know, life isn’t always fair.

I’m reminded of the saying, “Don’t miss the forest for the trees.” Your loved one with Tourette’s often may focus on the trees – the day-to-day difficulties that T.S. brings. Sometimes it will be very difficult for them to see the forest – the big picture of life.

Your patience on the days when the tics are unbearable, your understanding that your loved one is dealing with very difficult circumstances, and your unconditional love for them will be the rock that they will stand on.

When everything seems to be falling apart in your loved one’s life, knowing that you care and that you support him or her will give them a much-needed sense of stability. They may not be able to control themselves at all times, but knowing that you are standing firmly in their corner will give them a sense of control.

If you just happened to check out this book because you are interested in the art of magic, you will get a unique look at what it is like to pursue magic and entertainment as a career. I think you’ll find the stories and adventures interesting. They were almost as much fun to write about as they were to live.

The magic community is tightly knit. I’ve met most of my closest friends because of our shared love of magic, sleight-of-hand, and illusion. We keep our secrets close to our vests, but we also welcome newcomers who genuinely want to learn. If, after you’ve read my story, you want to dive deeper into magic, let me be the first to welcome you to an incredible hobby, part-time job, or career.

If you just happened to check this book out because it looked interesting, thank you! I hope you’ll dive in and spend some visiting with me. On these pages are a story of a life lived boldly.

I firmly believe that we are all on this planet together so we can help each other navigate our way through life. The simple truth is that we all deal with limitations. It’s how we respond to those limitations and circumstances that define who we become and where we go in life.

I would be humbled and honored if reading my story gave you the inspiration and motivation to start taking the steps to overcome any limitations or circumstances that feel “impossible” in your life.

That concludes the Introduction of my book, You Can Do the Impossible, Too!” I hope you enjoyed it.
