Recommended Things To Do:

The Polar Bear Plunge in the Waterfall – I can’t tell you exactly how to get to the waterfall because I was just a passenger on the bumpiest truck ride I’ve ever been on. My advice is to ask a local. You should definitely seek it out though. Taking the Polar Bear Plunge in the waterfall is both exhilarating and hilarious when done with friends!

My Thule, Greenland Adventure – (2017) It’s 2:00 am and the plane I am sitting on is taxiing out to the runway to take off. Suddenly I hear a voice behind me firmly say, “Sir, sit down. Sir, you have to sit down!”

I’m often surprised by the stupid things that people do on airplanes, so I don’t think too much about it. It’s only a few minutes later when one of the flight attendants makes an announcement over the intercom that one of our fellow passengers has gotten ill and we have to return to the terminal so the flight attendants can sanitize the cabin.

This is what we look like at 2 a.m. after having to disembark the plane and wait.

“Really?” I think to myself. I had seen and heard a very rowdy group of passengers drinking and partying pretty hard in the bar right next to our gate earlier that night. As it turns out, the party was a little too intense for this one guy and he has now gotten sick all over himself and delayed our flight to Greenland. Oh fun!

As I disembark with the other members of my team, we can’t help but look at each other and nod our heads that this is exactly the type of thing that happens when you are on tour.

Nathan, Christian, Katalina, and myself make ourselves comfortable and wait. Looking around I see a pretty frustrated group of passengers and I quickly realize that this is our opportunity to shine some light into some people’s day.

It’s always funny to watch people’s reactions as I turn to someone nearby with my arm’s outstretched and tell them to, “Pick a card…”

For the next twenty minutes my team and I (the Operation Magic All Stars team – who were on a three week tour of military bases) make people laugh, amaze them, and eliminate the frustration of such a stressful situation.

Not long after we finish up performing magic up close and personal, we get the go-ahead to re-board the plane.  We are officially on our way to Thule (pronounced Too-lee), Greenland!

As I disembark the plane six hours later, my first impression of Thule is of beautiful desolation. It doesn’t appear as though much of anything grows up here. I don’t see any trees. There’s not really any grass. And this is August.

So, what do I see?  I see mountains in the distance. It’s pretty gloomy and overcast.  And there is a lot of mud. Sounds like quite a vacation spot, doesn’t it?!

We grabbed lunch at the Top of the World Club.

But I’m not here on vacation. My team and I are here to entertain the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. And that is exactly what we are going to do.

Other than catching a couple of hours of sleep on the flight, we haven’t really slept. Fortunately, after we arrive our host takes us to lunch, to see our performing space, and then to the hotel so we can nap for a couple of hours before it’s showtime.

Since Greenland is so far north, I had been told that they were on a twenty-four hour cycle of daylight. So, trying to catch a nap in the middle of the day wasn’t going to be much different than sleeping at nighttime. But sleep deprivation will do wonders for insomnia, and I had no trouble falling asleep for about two hours.

We arrived back at the club with several hours to prepare and get ready before our scheduled performance time. All of the entertainers got their portions of the show ready with plenty of time. Unfortunately, we were having trouble getting the sound equipment working.

Our host worked with the club’s staff for about an hour trying to get our microphones and iPads plugged in and functioning properly - to no avail. At five minutes to showtime, we had a full house of excited people and still no sound.

Right as I started to gather the team up to tell them to do the best they could with the situation, the sound problem got figured out and we hurriedly got everything plugged in and functioning properly.

We had a fantastic show! The men and women who chose to spend their evening with us were ready to laugh and have fun – and we delivered tons of laughter and fun!

One of the coolest parts of the show for me was when I found out there was a guy in the audience who came to the show because he recognized me from the time I performed for him when he was stationed in Ethiopia. That was so cool!

After the show was over and we had met and talked to everyone who wanted to visit with us, we took a quick tour of the area.  As I said before, there is something pretty about how desolate Greenland is.

The highlight of our twenty-four hours in Thule (besides the show) was when our host took us on the bumpiest truck ride I’ve ever been on to a local waterfall to take the Polar Bear Plunge.

If we wanted to accept and take the Polar Bear Plunge we were given the choice to jump into the freezing cold ocean, or to step underneath this waterfall that was coming directly off a glacier. We chose the waterfall.

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew is that it was going to be cold…really dang cold. What I found out is that when you step into water that is that freezing cold it - sort of - shuts your body down and all you can think about is “get me out of this water!”

What I didn’t know as I stepped into the waterfall is that the ground directly underneath the waterfall was about six inches lower than the ground right next to where the water was rushing down. So, I got hit with freezing cold water and I basically fell into a ditch that I had to climb out of. It was both mind numbing and hilarious to watch and to participate in.

We were definitely awake after that experience!

Nonetheless, we caught a few hours of sleep that night before we had to wake up early to catch our flight back to the states so we could head on to Honduras to continue our tour. Thule was a blast!
