The world needs you, Mr./Ms. Entertainer. If you bring smiles and laughter, if you create amazement and awe, if you help people forget their difficult days - the world needs you. And it needs you in a big way.

I’ve traveled around the world. I’ve met soldiers far away from home. I’ve met men & women worried about how to pay their bills. I’ve met kids who were dealing with health issues that no one should ever deal with.

That’s because life is hard. Just look at the the news. Every day there are stories of difficulty and pain. The next time you’re on social media, look beyond the pollyanna-like lens that everyone wants you to think is their life and see what is really going on. Think about that conversation with your friend where he/she was dealing with doubt and frustration.

Entertainers, like you and me, are a noble breed. We are a bright light in someone’s tough day. We give the gift of happiness and child-like wonder. I’ll say it again, the world needs you and me.

Timing is everything. It’s really that simple. When you are trying to get an entertainment director or booking agent to hire you, reaching out to them at the perfect time will probably get you booked.

I hate to admit this, but I know I didn’t book some good acts in the past because I wasn’t in the booking mindset when they sent me their promotional and performance materials.

The entertainer in me says, “OMG! That sucks!” And if I’m being honest, yeah - it does.

Booking Agent Secrets - Get Referred

I was going through some notes, trying to figure out what I should share next, and I kept coming back to this. As I thought about it more and more, I realized how powerful this technique is for entertainers to use in getting hired.

This one technique has worked on me numerous times. I booked entertainers for House of Cards and on every single tour that I have ever produced because of this one tip. If I’m being honest, this is a SUPER TIP - and when used correctly, can magically flip the switch and create tons of new work opportunities.

If you are an entertainer and you want to work an entertainment venue or start building a SOLID relationship with a booking agent, get someone, who has already proved to be a good fit at the venue, or that has worked with the agent and done a great job for him or her, to refer you with a glowing (and honest) recommendation.

There is an old business adage that says, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” That has never proved to be more true than in this situation. And we are going to use that piece of knowledge to our advantage…

Never in my wildest dreams did I realize how poorly I (and other entertainers) was using email to contact Entertainment Directors, until I became one. Holy smokes! Most entertainers do a terrible job of using email.

As the former Entertainment Director of House of Cards in Nashville, TN, here is what a majority of emails looked like when they arrived in my inbox.

“Hi Jason. I’ve got XX (number of) years of experience in front of audiences and I’ve performed at the Magic Castle. Here’s my website -www.theirwebaddresshere.com. Thanks! -XYZ Magician”

Do you really think that’s a good way to contact a booking agent or entertainment director for the first time? The correct answer is no, and let’s break down why.

Gotta Get a Gig!

“Get a gig, get a gig, I gotta get a gig!”

If you are an entertainer trying to find an audience, get paid, and share your passion with the world, you may have said those words.

I’ve been a professional magician since 1999, and even I occasionally still find myself thinking that exact thing. What I didn’t know when I decided to become an entertainer all those years ago is that finding people to hire you, and more importantly - pay you, is more business than art.

Even though I became an entertainer for the purest of reasons - to give people an escape from the real world through amazement, laughter, and fun - what I didn’t know about the business side of show business, hurt me.
