BEHIND THE MAGIC

“To me, experiencing magic is much like watching a great movie, hearing a beautiful song, or seeing an amazing work of art.

–Jason Michaels

Q: What is your philosophy on magic?

Jason: I believe that many people think magic is about a trick or set of tricks that is supposed to fool you or pull one over on you. I don’t think that at all. While I do believe that magic should be surprising, amazing, and fun, magic actually happens when a connection is made between two people.

When I am performing and you as an audience member are watching, I want to reach out and build a relationship with you over the course of a show. I definitely want you to be “wowed” by the fun and amazing things that you are seeing, but I really want to connect with you and share an experience that you can’t have anywhere else.

Q: So, how do you accomplish that?

Jason: Well, I want my audience to feel like they are getting to know me through the magic. The magic that I create and perform is original to me.

I try very hard to share something personal in every original creation so that each and every performance is authentic to me and can’t be repeated or re-created by anyone else.

Q: That sounds great for a theatrical show. How do you create that experience in a corporate setting?

Jason: It’s funny you say that. It is what I try to accomplish in my theatrical performances. But it’s not limited to just a crowd of theater goers. Every group I’ve ever performed for has genuinely wanted to have a great time. They want to laugh, and laugh hard. They want to be surprised and amazed. They want to feel as if they are experiencing something, at that very moment, that no one else has ever experienced.

The key to entertaining a corporate audience is to do your homework well ahead of time. When I take the stage in front of a corporate group, I have done hours of research on exactly who these folks are. I know what they think is funny, I know who is going to be good to bring up on stage, I know what is important to them. I learn what makes them tick. Then I use that information to create customized magic and comedy that they go crazy over. It shows them that I care about the time we are spending together.
